Last AIGA Board Position:
President Emeritus, AIGA San Antonio
Bio:
Anthony Welborn received his BFA in Graphic Design from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. He then took off on a creative and cultural adventure and operated a graphic design studio in Spain for 12 years. Since returning to the U.S., he has continued his career as a designer and art director.
Anthony joined the San Antonio board in 2014, then served a term as Co-President in 2015, and then a term as President.
Personal Statement:
At every retreat I attend, while I feel an enormous afinity for all the chapters, and have many leaders that I consider friends from many different areas of the U.S., I feel a special connection with the chapters in the South region.
I think having been a chapter leader in this area for 4 years in a smaller chapter, but being connected to leadership from larger chapters gives me a good insight to the challenges we face, and what support is needed.
Proudest AIGA Moment:
When I became Co-President with Louis Cuellar before the Leadership in Raleigh, our board had completely dissolved except for us two. Our member numbers were at the lowest they had been since the inception of our chapter. It was on life support. Building a stellar board and bringing our chapter back to life was a herculean task, but rewarding.
Aside from that, so many events where I felt like I was leaving skin on the pavement to make happen, but the satisfaction of seeing them work always made it worth it.
Point of View:
I think my age an experience, and the blessing/curse that I've worked in other industries in my career gives me a unique perspective. I think my time spent as an ex-pat also helps me be more empathetic to those who might be in new situations and new roles and help support and mentor them.
